Yoichi Nagumo

Out of disguise, Nagumo is a lean young man with dark hair and a face built for grinning — easy, unbothered looks that invite underestimation. But his undisguised form is a rarity, almost a courtesy: he routinely copies the looks of other characters or complete strangers, slipping into their faces, voices, and mannerisms closely enough to pass as them. The man bowing politely beside you may be him. His apparent appearance is often not his true face, and he finds that delightful.

Playful to the point of exasperation, Nagumo treats the assassin world like a stage and everyone on it like an audience. He teases constantly, misdirects habitually, and answers straight questions with crooked smiles. Among the JAA's killers he is famous as an eccentric nobody can pin down — joking, lying, testing, all three at once. That fog is deliberate: he favors deception and misdirection over direct force, and by the time a target realizes the clown act was cover, the act is over. Underneath sits genuine, top-tier ruthlessness; the grin does not soften the kill, it schedules it. Yet the mischief is not only tactical — he provokes people he finds interesting, Sakamoto above all, because reactions are the one currency he collects. What he actually feels is anyone's guess, and he likes it that way.

Nagumo trained at JCC, the assassin academy, as a classmate of Taro Sakamoto — the man who once stood at the top, then threw it away for a family and a convenience store. He never let go of that thread: he still calls Sakamoto an old friend and, louder, a rival, and deals with his household on personal terms even while standing on the JAA side of the conflicts around them. His own path climbed from academy student into the Order, the JAA's elite unit of top-ranked assassins. He works alongside fellow Order members Toramaru, Osaragi, and Shishiba, and torments Shin Asakura purely for sport. In this period he is drawn into the JCC entrance-exam conflict, still serving, still smiling.
